Behavior Change: When Motivation Wanes






Behavior modification is often at the heart of coaching. It applies to my broader coaching experience with both health coaching and business coaching. We've all been told that it's about the journey and not the destination. That saying holds true regardless of the goal.


What happens when we feel like we are stuck and the motivation to keep going wanes?


One thing I've learned along the way is that while motivation can be a powerful catalyst for change, it's not always readily available. In fact, many of us struggle with maintaining motivation over the long term, making behavior change a daunting task. So, let's delve into the struggles of behavior change when motivation is lacking, and explore strategies to overcome these challenges.


  1. Understanding the Motivation Rollercoaster: Motivation is not a constant; it fluctuates. One day, you might feel energized and ready to conquer your goals, while the next, you might find yourself struggling to lace up your sneakers. Recognizing this ebb and flow is crucial for navigating the ups and downs of behavior change.

  2. Identifying Barriers: When motivation wanes, it's essential to identify the barriers standing in your way. These could be internal, such as self-doubt or lack of confidence, or external, such as time constraints or environmental factors. By pinpointing these barriers, you can develop targeted strategies to overcome them.

  3. Setting Realistic Goals: Unrealistic expectations can quickly drain motivation. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on setting small, achievable goals that align with your values and priorities. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small, to maintain momentum.

  4. Finding Intrinsic Motivation: While external motivators like rewards or praise can be helpful in the short term, they're not sustainable in the long run. Cultivating intrinsic motivation, or a genuine desire to change for yourself, is key to lasting behavior change. Reflect on your personal reasons for wanting to improve your health, whether it's to feel more energized, reduce stress, or simply live a longer, happier life.

  5. Building a Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support your health journey. Whether it's a workout buddy, a supportive friend or family member, or a professional coach, having a strong support system can help keep you accountable and motivated, even when times get tough.

  6. Practicing Self-Compassion: Change is hard, and setbacks are inevitable. Instead of beating yourself up over a slip-up, practice self-compassion and kindness. Remember that each day is a new opportunity to make healthier choices, and that progress is not linear.

  7. Seeking Professional Guidance: Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we may find ourselves stuck in a rut. In these cases, seeking guidance from a professional health coach or therapist can provide valuable insight and support. They can help you identify underlying issues, develop personalized strategies, and provide the accountability you need to stay on track.

It's okay to stumble along the way, as long as you pick yourself up and keep moving forward. By understanding the challenges of behavior change when motivation is lacking, we can avoid the feeling of going in circles. We can implement strategies to overcome the challenges and pave the way for lasting health and wellness.
